How Much Electricity Does a Space Heater Use?
As Oklahoma faces a drastic dip in temperatures, many households may turn to electric space heaters for extra warmth. Whether you're supplementing heat in a room, keeping a family member comfortable, or warming up a workspace, space heaters are convenient, affordable, and portable.
However, while they are useful, electric space heaters can also lead to higher energy bills if used excessively. It’s important to remember that they are designed to supplement your home’s heating system—not replace it.
Here is some helpful information from Canadian Valley Electric Cooperative (CVEC) about space heaters, their energy consumption, and how to use them safely.
Understanding Energy Use
Your electric bill is based on the total kilowatt-hours (kWh) used each month. One kWh equals 1,000 watts used for one hour. For example, a 1,500-watt space heater consumes 1.5 kWh for every hour it runs.
To estimate the cost of operating a space heater, use this simple calculation:
(Heater wattage ÷ 1,000) × Hours used per month × kWh rate ($0.08468)
Here’s what that looks like for a 1,500-watt heater:
1 hour per day = $0.13 per day
4 hours per day = $0.51 per day
8 hours per day = $1.02 per day
12 hours per day = $1.53 per day
24 hours per day = $91.50 per month
Space Heater Fire Hazards
When using an electric space heater in your home, it’s important to be aware of the potential dangers. Nearly half of all home fires occur in December, January, and February. According the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), space heaters—whether portable or stationary—account for 43% of home heating fires and 85% of home heating fire deaths.
Space Heater Safety Tips
If you decide to use an electric space heater, follow these important safety guidelines:
· Keep at least 3 feet of clearance around the heater, away from flammable items like curtains and furniture.
· Choose a heater certified by a nationally recognized testing institution such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
· Select a heater with a guard around the heating element to prevent burns or accidental contact.
· Keep children and pets away from the heater at all times.
· Ensure the heater has an automatic shut-off feature in case it tips over.
· Never leave a space heater unattended—always turn it off when leaving a room or going to sleep.
By following these safety tips and monitoring your energy usage, you can enjoy the warmth of a space heater without unnecessary risks or high electric bills.
